Be sure to have blankets, salt or cat litter, flashlights, matches, a shovel and ice scraper. You may need any of these things if you get stuck on ice, you have to pull off the road because of poor visibility or your locks freeze.
GET A TUNE UP: Before you leave for your road trip, get a tune up, maintenance work done, an oil change (if needed) and fill all your fluids. Also, be sure to check your tire pressure as well. The last thing you want is a tire blow out or car malfunction in freezing weather or a storm.
KEEP OTHERS UPDATED ON YOUR STATUS: Have a point of contact that you can keep posted on your trip. Have set intervals for communication, for example text your family at the top of each hour with your location and any pertinent updates. This will help in the event of an extreme situation or emergency. If you don’t check-in then they will know something is wrong and can try to get help to you.
